Varahi is the commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Lalita Devi. Residing at the Ajna Chakra, She has vast armies at Her command (ajna), with which She can defeat any enemy. Positive use of Varahi’s powers enables us to treat various diseases and internal enemies, such as kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (delusion), moha (pride), mada (jealousy) and matsarya (envy), and bring them under control. Thus Varahi can be used for effectively controlling diseases and improving one’s quality of life. She can also be invoked to bring relief to others, by chanting and intending with their names and doing japa (mantra recitation) or prokshana (the actual or visualized sprinkling of energized water on the person on whose behalf you are appealing) with the Varahi Mantra. Varahi is especially useful in bringing relief to terminally ill patients, such as those suffering from cancer and AIDS.
Symbolism of Vaarahi
The myth of the boar is not just confined to Hindu Mythology. It is in the Celtic, Japanese, Chinese, Greek, American Indian and Egyptian cultures as well. Goddess Ceridwin, a Celtic Mother Goddess was also called the “Old White Sow”. The Boar too is a sacred animal of Goddess Isis (the Egyptian equivalent of Durga) and her brother is a black boar (called Seth).
In the Celtic and Welsh version, the boar represents courage and strong warriors.
In China, the boar represents the wealth of the forest.
In Japan, the boar depicts courage.
In association with the Saptamtrkas, Vaarahi can be said to be the representation of the controlled energy of courage and fearlessness that has gone out of control in us which causes envy and greed and leads to attachment (material and general)
We need courage in order to fight against the enemy, but sometimes success makes us blind which results in arrogance and greed. Meditating and worshipping Vaarahi is like a reminder to us of the basic nature that is inherent in us that we must constantly be aware of.
